Sweet Dreams Koh Rong Resort Review
The view from the room
Rating: 8.5/10
Our room type for this time was Family Bungalow (with seaview), meaning we had the beach right in front of us, and had 2 rooms and 2 large double beds.
What I love the most and think is the highlight of Sweet Dreams Koh Rong is that the main room is surrounded by its beautiful glass sliding doors, so we got to have the bright room and panoramic beach and sea view during the day.
I love waking up with an ocean view right in front of me, it immediately gives me great energy and a good mood, followed by a cup of coffee at the terrace was just a perfect way to slowly start my day on Koh Rong island!
Breakfast
Rating: 7.5/10
For breakfast here at Sweet Dreams Koh Rong resort we had the options from western and Asian styles, along with pasty, a plate of tropical fruits, and a drink. On the menu, there are even fried rice/noodles!!! Very Asians style for sure, as we do eat that for breakfast sometimes, if you love fried rice/noodle or love to try breakfast in our Asian ways, you have the options!
All the food tasted good, and all together, was more than enough for the morning!
While their breakfast is decent, adding more refreshing options like smoothie bowls or yogurt would be a great idea in my opinion. Given the hot climate here, a light breakfast can be quite appetising.
Facilities & equipment & atmosphere
Rating: 8/10
Other than the view from the room, what I like about Sweet Dreams Koh Rong Resort are the wide, beachfront infinity pool, beach huts, sunbeds, and the dreamy fairy lights at nighttime.
They also have a bar and a restaurant that offer decent food and beverages here (which will be discussed in the next section).
During our stay in the room, we had a range of amenities that made our experience comfortable and convenient. These included stable wifi, a clean and comfortable mattress, bathrobes, a reliable air conditioner, a mini fridge, a spacious indoor shower and bathroom, and a practical drying rack for our clothing, both inside and outside table and chairs, and more.
Bar and restaurant
Rating: 8/10
After trying a few places for local food on Koh Rong island, I’d say something I was so glad to have at Sweet Dreams Koh Rong resort is that they have a restaurant and bar that serve delicious, great dishes and drinks for lunch and dinner with reasonable prices.
On this South East Asia trip we were all about trying local food, some places are either not special or not good at all. But at Sweet Dreams Koh Rong, their cuisine exceeded our expectations! All the dishes we had here were not just delicious but with sophisticated taste. We could just sit down and make sure we had good food.
The mango salad was very refreshing, with little sour and spicy sauce and little shrimps, it was just perfect for lunch during hot days!! Pina Colada and mixed berry smoothie was of good standard too!
Location and convenience
Rating: 8/10
This resort is situated on the east side of Koh Rong Island, where the sea is relatively calm compared to the south and west sides (in October at least). The environment here feels peaceful and quiet, making it perfect for relaxation and enjoying a holiday.
If you are up for exploring the island or visit livelier, party areas, you can easily rent a scooter or book a driver through the resort. Most of Koh Rong Island’s attractions, including beautiful white sand beaches, stunning sunset viewpoints, ports, beach bars, and stores, are just a 10-15 minute drive away from Sweet Dreams Koh Rong Resort.
After a day of exploration, returning to the quiet resort to stargaze, take a swim at the infinity pool under the fairy lights, and unwind with a smoothie and Pina Colada was a really lovely experience.
Furthermore, the location is excellent for watching the sunrise. I was able to see it from the beach right in front of our bungalow. Solpat (Simon) mentioned that we could even watch the sunrise while kayaking, though I didn’t dare to do it in the dark without anyone around, otherwise it could have been a dreamy experience.
He also told us that in areas with fewer lights, we might be able to spot bioluminescent plankton!
Overall, the location is superb for me, and convenient too! The only downside is that many hotels and resorts on Koh Rong Island aren’t directly on the well-paved main road. After passing a well-developed main road, you may encounter some bumpy roads before reaching the hotels and resorts on the island. This resort is no exception. However, I believe that with time, these roads will eventually be improved.
Available activities
Rating: 8/10
When staying at Sweet Dreams Koh Rong, you can enjoy sunbathing at their own beach, having tropical smoothies, cocktails, or have a swim at the beachfront pool or immersing yourself in a quiet read.
Other than that, if you’re a fan of water activities, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are available to use during the stays. As mentioned above, this location is an ideal place to try these activities, as the sea on this side of Koh Rong Island seems relatively calm. However, for your safety, I recommend asking the staff to check if the equipment is in good working order, wearing a life jacket, and informing the staff before you set off from the shore. This way, they can keep an eye on your location and check if you are back, especially since there is no lifeguard on duty here.
With additional prices, the resort can also arrange snorkelling trips that include a fishing experience and a barbecue or assist you in renting a motorbike, which allows you to explore the beautiful attractions on Koh Rong Island.
We rented a motorbike and drove around the island and discovered some amazing white sand beaches! So, I highly recommend you try it too!! The staff Solpat (Simon) was very helpful in getting us a motorbike and patiently letting us test it. For your own safety, don’t forget to ask for helmets!
Cleanliness & service
Rating: 8/10
All the staff was very friendly and helpful here. Love that they always greet guests with smiles and energetic energy, 2 of them speak really great English and gave us so much information on exploring the island, and some Cambodian cultures etc. Even before we arrived in Cambodia, they provided us with many helpful safety tips for travelling in Cambodia, when I was very worried about it, including the safer bus company to take etc. I am thankful for it.
I want to give a big shoutout to Solpat (Simon) for his kindness, happy energy, tips of exploring the island and for his help during our stay at Sweet Dreams Koh Rong Resort.
In terms of cleanliness, the rooms, beds, and bathrooms were all well-maintained, and clean, we had no issues.
The beach area is enjoyable, though it’s important to be aware that frequent rains during the wet season can sometimes affect its appearance. However, considering it’s a natural environment and the low season, these conditions are understandable.
Overall, we had pleasant stays at Sweet Dreams Koh Rong resort, leaving us fully recharged and ready to continue our journey.
So If you’re planning a trip to Koh Rong, Cambodia with your friends/family/partners, and seeking a sea-view hotel that offers dreamy views, quality relaxation, delicious cuisine, ocean activities, and very kind and nice service, I would recommend Sweet Dreams Koh Rong Resort without hesitation.

Are International credit cards accepted on Koh Rong Island? Should I use credit cards or cash?
In general, credit cards are accepted at hotels and big restaurants. I had no problem using my Taiwanese credit card and my Italian friend also had no problem using her Italian card.
However, if you want to pay tips or shop at small vendors and grocery stores, you will need to bring USD (yes, in Cambodia USD is widely used). It’s better to bring $1 and $5 notes, as things in Cambodia are quite cheap.
For transportation tickets such as bus and ferry, you can only pay with cash if you purchase them offline. So, I’d suggest buying them online in advance so you can use a credit card and avoid the need to carry too much cash in USD.
How to get to Koh Rong Island from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh Cambodia?
Either you are going to Koh Rong Island from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, you need to get to Sihanoukville city first and take a ferry from there.
We took the ferry with Island Speed Ferry Cambodia from Sihanoukville and it was clean, comfortable and a 45 minutes smooth ride. I’d recommend going with them too and booking your tickets in advance here.
As for how to get to Sihanoukville from Siem Reap or from Phnom Penh , you can take day bus, night bus or book a private driver.
For us, we took a night bus (with Giant Ibis) from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville to save daytime hours on transportation, and we still think it was a good idea. The bus was good, clean, with a toilet and we were able to sleep since it had a cabin-style setup, allowing passengers to choose between single cabin or double cabin.
You can check the price and availability for the bus tickets to Sihanoukville from Siem Reap here or here for the tickets from Phnom Penh, where I booked ours. It’s a very convenient and fast way to secure the seats. After booking, you will receive an e-ticket with a QR code via email like this. For a detailed review about the night bus, I will share it here soon.
