Mackenzie Falls walk in Grampians guide: trail difficulty, return trip distance and time, photos along the way.

According to Visit Grampians, Mackenzie Falls is one of Victoria’s largest waterfalls and a popular attraction in Grampians National Park. This guide covers whether it’s worth visiting, trail difficulty, hiking distance and duration, plus photos along the way.

Difficulty rating for Mackenzie Falls walk in Grampians

Although the Mackenzie Falls walk is short and not particularly difficult, I’d still rate it a 3 out of 10 because of the 260 rock steps each way, meaning you will do around 520 steps on the return trip. Some parts are a bit steep too.

It wasn’t the easiest path, but we took our time and managed it.

Be aware that, if it’s raining, the rocks can get slippery, so take it slow and be extra careful.

How long is Mackenzie Falls walk? return trip distance and time

Mackenzie Falls walk in Grampians National Park is about a 2km return trip, and took us about almost 2 hours.

From the car park, it took me 30 minutes to walk to the base of the Mackenzie Falls. But as usual, we were taking photos, enjoying the view on the way. We also stayed around the base of the Mackenzie Falls for a while. So if you just want to have a quick visit, it shouldn’t take too long.

Is Mackenzie Falls in Grampians National Park worth visiting?

Personally, I think whether Mackenzie Falls Grampians is worth visiting really depends on where you are from and how interested you are in waterfalls.

Yes, Mackenzie Falls is a beautiful and peaceful spot to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the waterfall scenery. However, if you come from a country with plenty of waterfalls (like me, from Taiwan) or you’ve already seen more spectacular ones elsewhere, Mackenzie Falls might not feel particularly unique.

And if you are not a fan of walking up and down lots of stairs, you may not find the visit worthy.

For me, I didn’t think visiting Mackenzie Falls is a special experience, but it was still a nice visit, as our private multi-day tour guide planned this waterfall walk first thing in the morning, there were no tourists around at that hour, so we had the whole place to ourselves for a long time and it felt refreshing and peaceful.

Grampians National Park Hotel and accommodation recommendation

Grampians National Park accomodation Breeze Holiday Parks Grampians
Grampians National Park accomodation recommendation: Breeze Holiday Parks Grampians

Accommodation options in the Grampians are relatively limited, with most hotels, cabins concentrated around Halls Gap.

I highly recommend 🔗Breeze Holiday Parks (Grampians), where we stayed during our trip. They offer a range of cabin options suitable for different group sizes. Since we were traveling as a family, we chose the Deluxe Family Cabin, which worked perfectly for us.

It offered a clean, cozy & cute cabin with 2 bedrooms, a little living room, a fully equipped kitchen and both AC and heating. It’s not huge but has everything you need. And the price is fair, I highly recommend it.

You can compare the price 🔗on this platform and 🔗this site. Both offer great discounts sometimes!

If you want to stay right in Halls Gap town centre, within walking distance to restaurants and shops, 🔗Breeze Holiday Park Halls Gap is another great option. Plus, you can often spot wild kangaroos around Halls Gap.

One important note: for both locations, make sure to book the deluxe option. Based on our experience, the deluxe rooms were great, while the budget ones tend to have negative reviews online.

Restaurant recommendations in Grampians National Park

For restaurants and food, I recommend Pizza at 🔗Town Fryer Fish & Chips Pizza Bar . It is surprisingly good, cheesy, full of flavour and not dry at all.

You can also try some pastries 🔗here. The Spinach & Feta cheese, steak & mushroom, steak & bacon flavours pies are all approved by us!
