Unveiling the Best Paths to Reach Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida

Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach are located at East side of Nusa Penida. Due to lesser tourist traveling to East side when they visit Nusa Penida, Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach are relatively quiet but both reachable, and offering unique landscapes as well as adventurous experiences. Read on to find out the best ways to visit these 2 beaches.

I love both Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach, if time allows and you have enough energy, check both beaches out, it’s worthy!

Below is the information about getting to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach with two different routes. The first one suggests an easiest path going to both beaches, the other is an adventurous route requires more hike, so you can choose the one that suits you best.

Transportation

1. Rent a Scooter with/without driver to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach

Once you are in Nusa Penida, you can rent a scooter/moped and drive it by yourself for 70k-85k IDR/day. If you’re not sure about driving it yourself, you can also rent a scooter with a driver for 120k IDR/day.

Important: Before you set off, please note that there aren’t many petrol stations on the way. Instead, you will find some locals selling petrol in bottles, which usually costs IDR 10,000-20,000 per litre. So don’t forget to fill up when you see one.

You can ask your hotel staff to arrange one for you or rent it at at Toyapakeh port.

2. Hire a car with private driver and customise your East Nusa Penida tour

If you are not comfortable driving a scooter, booking a car with a private driver and customising your tour is an easier option for you to avoid driving on bumpy roads.

Routes for going to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach

Atuh Beach Nusa Penida

Suggestion 1 is an easier route which recommended by Locals. It requires lesser climbing up and down the cliffs. Easier for you if you don’t have much time on the east side of the island.

Suggestion 2 is the one we took without knowing the above route. it is adventurous, but requires a bit of climbing, and lots more time to rest at each beach.

Suggestion 1: easiest route

Locals shared this route with me after hearing about my rough experience climbing down to Atuh Beach. For this route, you need to set “Diamond and Atuh Car Park” as the destination on your Google Maps. This is the parking lot that provides easy access to the entrances of Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach, as well as Atuh Cliff, Thousand Islands viewpoint, and the Tree House. If you are driving from the north side of Nusa Penida Island, it will take about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your speed. I wouldn’t suggest driving fast since the road in Nusa Penida is a bit rough, although the locals are constantly fixing and developing it to make it better.

If you plan to visit all the above places, I suggest you save a whole day for the east side of Nusa Penida as you will be walking up and down the cliffs a lot and may need more time to rest.

Suggestion 2: adventurous route

This is the route we took before we knew about the other route. It’s adventurous and requires some hand climbing, but the view from here is completely different from other beaches. Especially the unique shape of the rocks and the view behind the huts make it stand out. It also gave me a feeling of discovering a hidden beach, which I really liked!

We put “Atuh Beach” as the destination in Google Maps, and it takes about 30 to 50 minutes (50 minutes for slower drivers like me) by scooter with a nice ocean view along the way and a smooth drive before a steep slope down to the Atuh Beach parking lot. The last hill feels like a roller coaster ride – really thrilling but fun. However, locals have told me that the road has improved in recent months.

Once you get down from the hill, you will see the parking lot for Atuh Beach. Scooter/moped parking requires the purchase of something (like a bottle of water) from the vendor there, but you would need it anyway.

You will then have to walk down a steep path to reach the beach, but don’t worry too much because later you can have a proper rest on bean bags, sip dragon fruit juice, and enjoy the sea view at the restaurant called Warung Atuh Mahendra, just like we did.

When you’ve had enough rest, you can start walking up to the Atuh Cliff and Diamond Beach from the path on the right side of Atuh Beach.

As you reach the Atuh Cliff, you will see the Diamond and Atuh Car Park, and the staircase for going down to Diamond Beach. This means that you can also visit the Thousand Islands viewpoint and the Tree House.
