Orchid Island might be small, but there is so much to see and do here! Whether you are into snorkeling, exploring unique Tao indigenous culture, chasing sunrises and sunsets, or hiking, this little island has it all. In this guide I share 20 best Orchid Island attractions by villages, so you know where to go while traveling around the island, and can make the most out of your trip on Orchid Island, Taiwan.

Useful Orchid Island travel information to help you plan your Orchid Island trip:

  • Orchid Island ferry price & where to buy: Full fare is NTD 2,400 per person, children (ages 3 to 12) and seniors (65 and above) are NTD 1,200 per person. 🔗This is my go to website for booking Orchid Island ferry tickets. They even offer discounts for the round-trip tickets sometimes. For full Orchid Island ferry guide, click 🔗 here.
  • Orchid Island (Lanyu) scooter price & where to book: it is usually 500 NTD/day on the island, but you can reserve a scooter in advance via 🔗 this discounted list. Read 🔗 Orchid Island transportation guide.
  • Hotels on Orchid Island(Lanyu), Taiwan: Orchid Island is a simple, cultured, traditional island, so the places to stay are mainly guest houses, fancy hotels are not yet present on the island. To find the hotel on Orchid Island, the easiest and quickest way is to check the availability from 🔗 here and 🔗here (the latter one you need to choose specifically for Lanyu Township, Taitung, Taiwan).

Even though Orchid Island (Lanyu) isn’t big, it has 6 villages as follows:

  • East side: Ivalino (野銀部落), Iranmeylek (東清部落)
  • North side: Iraraley (朗島部落)
  • North west side: Yayo (椰油部落)
  • South West side: Imorod (紅頭部落)
  • South side: Iratay (漁人部落)

Keep reading for unique attractions in each village.

Ivalino Village is a great place on the island to experience well-preserved aboriginal’s culture (Tao/Yami ethnic group).

You can check out the traditional underground houses built by the locals, some people still live there.

Some of the locals are happy to show tourists their unique underground houses, so when you are in Ivalino Village, you might get a business card from them on the street, take it in case you want to experience this special way of living.

野銀冷泉

There is a natural infinity pool in Ivalino Village where you can go for a quick swim or cool off from the summer heat while traveling around Orchid Island.

The colour of the cold spring here is slightly milky, and you can smell a bit of sulfur. It’s purely natural and relaxing.

What’s better is that the water here is shallow, so it is good for everyone, even the people who don’t swim can come here to chill.

A little thing to be aware of is that the volcano rocks here are sharp, I’d recommend you wear water sandals or aqua shoes. Trust me, you would not want to go barefoot on those rocks.

And if your feet start feeling a little itchy or tingly while walking around, don’t panic, it’s probably just the tiny fish nibbling on you!

orchid island sunrise

There are quite a few giant natural rock formations with interesting shapes, each of them were named after what they look like.

Between Helmet Rock & Sleepy Lion Rock is one of the great spots for watching sunrise on Orchid Island, we found it randomly and loved it.

But as this part of the island is really windy, you have to be careful while riding a scooter here.

Lanyu Weather Station is at the top of Orchid Island, you can overlook the island from here, which makes it the best spot to watch sunset, sunrise and stars.

The road going up to Lanyu Weather Station is really steep though, please be careful!

Located on the east side of the island, Iranmeylek Village is the most vibrant area and popular area to witness sunrise on Orchid Island.

蘭嶼拼板船東清村 the wooden boat, Tatala Iranmeylek Bay, Orchid Island

Iranmeylek Fishing Bay is full of things to do both day and at night. It includes going on a ride on the Tao special wooden boat- Tatala, wildlife watching at night and watching sunrise & moonrise, and there’s even a little night market to grab some delicious food!

The most unique and must do experience here is riding or rowing a Tatala, the traditional wooden canoe built without a single nail, handcrafted by Tao men (local aboriginals) that are used for fishing during flying fish season.

What makes it even more impressive is that the patterns on the boat are not painted on! They are all hand-carved. If you look at it closer, you will find the whole thing is super impressive.

The price for experiencing a Tatala boat on Orchid Island is NTD 500 per person, and the ride is about 30 minutes. Even though it is not cheap, I personally think it is worth trying, as there’s nowhere else to experience the exact thing.

the wooden boat, Tatala Iranmeylek Bay, Orchid Island

If you ask me whether riding a Tatala boat is easy, the answer is no! It looks so much easier watching the local fishermen do it than actually doing it myself. I tried rowing once and the boat barely moved, and I ended up needing the local guys to help me out. But it was really fun I have to say!

One thing to keep in mind is that the Tatala boat experience is closed during the flying fish season( from February to June). As our boat man said, during this time, the boats are used for fishing and ceremonies, and there are strict taboos because of it, including tourists not being allowed to touch the boats at all during these months!

Iranmeylek Hidden Spot is a stunning natural rock pool connected directly to the ocean, with sea caves formed by crashing waves. And it is one of the most popular attractions on Orchid Island. People love coming here to snorkel, swim, and explore the cave.

Orchid Island Iranmeylek hidden spot

My favourite thing to do here is climbing down the wooden ladder to the cave & pool at its low tide, as it provides a mysterious, adventurous feeling and the serene vibe.

And since the experience and view is completely different depending on whether you visit during high tide or low tide, Iranmeylek Secret Spot is a place you can keep going back to.

Orchid Island Iranmeylek hidden spot photo

One time we had the whole place to ourselves. It was so quiet, and the feeling of looking up at the sky from the cave while listening to the echo of our voices and the sound of sea splashing the rocks is a little scary, exciting, calming and also weird (in a good way), the whole experience is just so surreal, as if there will be something appear somewhere, and it did! A sea snake sneaked out and swam past us and waited near the bottom of the ladder where we were supposed to exit from. We freaked out but managed to get out safe in the end.

The other time I also saw 2 sea snakes….So yes! There are sea snakes at Iranmeylek Hidden Spot, and they are poisonous. Please be very careful when you are going to this secret spot, and don’t irritate or hurt the sea snake when you see any.

Even though Google Maps shows it, it really isn’t easy to find the exact spot.

For detailed directions to Iranmeylek Secret Spot, you can check out #4 in my🔗 Orchid Island snorkeling spots guide!

Just nearby Iranmeylek Hidden Spot there’s a pavilion where you can sit and relax while enjoying the ocean view.

If your friends/family are going to Iranmeylek Hidden Spot but you don’t want to go, this pavilion is a great spot to wait and hide from the sun!

Orchid Island attraction The Lover's Cave

Lover’s Cave is a sea arch, and it’s a beautiful photo spot on Orchid Island but it’s very close to the edge. I’d suggest mind your step and don’t get too close to the edge!

Another thing to know is that swimming isn’t allowed here, and the rocks are really sharp, so make sure you wear shoes that can protect your feet and won’t slip.

Location of Lover’s Cave: 🔗here

The name comes from its shape, though honestly when I saw it in person I couldn’t really see why.

Many people love hiking to the top of it to see the stunning views of the mountains, Iranmeylek Bay, and Battleship Rock. If you like hiking, you might want to give it a go.

Iraraley Village is located on the north side of the island, where you can also spot Tatala boats and traditional underground houses.

There are many naturally formed giant rock formations that are considered as great photo spots, each one has its own unique shapes and names. When you see them in person and look them up on Google Maps, you might laugh at how creative people were when naming them.

For example 🔗Tank Rock and 🔗 Twin Lions Rock.

Orchid Island Jipineyyao cave (Jaykmey Sawasawalan)

My favourite rock on Orchid Island is Hongtou Rock, a natural rock tunnel that looks like a blue door.

To get the best view, I’d suggest you ride in the direction from Yayo Village towards Iraraley Village, that way you will see the ocean right as you pass through the tunnel. Riding through it is an amazing experience, I really love it.

The little corner at the entrance of it is also a great photo spot, the view is picturesque, and looks like a painting.

Watch out for strong crosswinds here though, make sure you take it slow on the downhill and hold on tight when riding a scooter.

Orchid Island Jikarahem cave 五孔洞

There are 5 caves here, and each has its own meaning related to ancient stories and all of them look mysterious. There is even one cave with a big cross.

This place has become one of the good photo spots on Orchid Island. You can take the photos from inside the tunnel looking out, with the blue ocean and sky as your backdrop, and because you are shooting against the light, you will get a nice silhouette effect!

Tank Rock is a giant black rock that looks like a big tank, and it’s located on the Orchid Island Coastal Road.

Honestly, I wasn’t that impressed the first time I passed by. But the second time I went to Orchid Island, I stopped and had a bit of discovery. And I was amazed by the view, the way the mountains and ocean come together in one view is so stunning like the perfect natural frame and painting. And I felt impressed again by what Orchid Island and Taiwan can offer.

There are also some goats hanging around here. Seeing them walk, eat, and cross roads all so slowly, it feels like it is a reminder for us to slow down and enjoy the present moment . If you drive through this road, make sure you take it slow so they can cross the road safely.

Orchid Island snorkeling spot jimawawa

Jimawawa is a surprising spot where you can watch the sunset and also snorkel.

We found this spot randomly when riding the scooter around the island, and didn’t expect to see that much pretty coral under the sea and sunset afterwards.

It’s definitely a spot worth checking out, I do recommend it.

For more details about Jimawawa & snorkeling spots on Orchid Island, you can see 🔗this article.

Iraraley hidden gem

Iraraley hidden gem is a natural pool that is easy to find and really is my top 3 favourite Orchid Island attraction. Compared to🔗 other snorkeling and swimming spots on Orchid Island, this one is wider and deeper, so it’s easier to actually swim.

You can spot tropical fish, parrotfish, and loads of crabs underwater. I ended up swimming here for over two hours, and still didn’t want to leave.

You might also get the chance to meet local aboriginal kids here, they are like little mermaids, and have great swimming skills.

Going for a swim here to cool off can be a good idea while traveling around Orchid Island.

Yayo tribe is an important part of Orchid Island as the main ferry port (Lanyu Kaiyuan Fishing Port Wharf), the only gas station and another 7-Eleven (convenience store) in Orchid Island is located here. So if you need fuel, food and water, don’t forget to get it when you pass by the Yayo tribe!

蘭嶼夕陽虎頭坡 Tiger Hill sunset

Tiger’s head hill is one of the best spots on Orchid Island to catch a sunset!

While waiting and watching sunset here, you will find a bao-shaped rock right in front of you, and maybe a group of goats wandering around, they might even photobomb your shots, which will make your photos cuter and more unique.

There is a parking lot and a pavilion at the spot, so it’s very convenient for you to visit.

Imorod village is a convenient area, it has a Post Office, Health Centre, famous Orchid Island attractions and many popular, tasty eateries.

I stayed in Imaorod Village twice, both oceanfront stays 🔗Jimmy Explorer’s Campsite & Blue Sea Blue Sky Guesthouse (碧海藍天民宿) are all located here, and are nearby many delicious food spots. You can stay in this area too if you want to find popular Orchid Island attractions and great food easily.

Orchid Island snorkeling spot Tide Pools at Nuclear Waste Dumpsite

This is one of the🔗 best snorkeling spots on Orchid Island, thanks to its crystal clear water, great visibility, and colourful underwater scenery.

You can spot many kinds of colourful fish and coral, and it’s even home to plenty of clownfish! If you want to explore the vibrant underwater world, this is the place to be.

But I’ve also seen sea snakes here. If you visit this spot and see them, don’t panic, and don’t disturb them, just try to keep your distance from them!

Ja-langoina Grassland is one of my favourite Orchid Island attractions. With wide open space and stunning panoramic views of the ocean and grassland, it is a perfect place to lie down and watch the sunset, enjoy the view of the moon above the ocean, take a slow walk, or just daydream. Definitely a peaceful and beautiful spot!

Location of Ja-langoina Grassland: 🔗here

Orchid Island Old man rock

As you walk in from the entrance of Ja-langoina Grassland, you will see a rock formation that looks a bit like a man’s face, that’s Old Man Rock.

I really like the photos of it with blue sky and clear ocean, it’s a really stunning combination. Be careful when taking photos near the edge though, since there’s a cliff right below!

Location of Old Man Rock: 🔗here

Big Tianchi is a volcanic craters lake that gradually filled up with rainwater over time.

Getting up to Big Tianchi requires a proper hike and it’s not an easy one. According to Youtuber, there will be some sections that require going up with ropes and using all four limbs to climb, so it suits experienced hikers more.

Personally, after watching a few YouTube videos of people hiking up to Big Tianchi, I decided it wasn’t for me. If you’re planning to go, make sure you do your research and go fully prepared, or even better if you hire a local guide to take you up. Because safety first!

There aren’t many attractions in Iratay Village but the only airport on Orchid Island(Lanyu) is located here.

Lanyu airport

All flights between Taitung and Orchid Island take off and land here.

There’s even a pavilion and a little cafe nearby where you can sit and watch the flights.

As the planes are really small and the runway is short, each takeoff can only take about 2 minutes and landing requires some seriously skilled pilots.

Watching it all happen right in front of us was such an intense but fun experience. We were there for about 2 hours and caught 2 flights.

I’d say it’s pretty interesting, and worth staying for.

If you want to check the flight schedule, you can check 🔗Daily Air’s official website.
